Smartphone Market: Apple, Samsung And The Benchwarmers

smartphone-shutterstockThe US smartphone market share story is starting to get a little boring. For well over a year it has been a two horse race. Apple is the single top smartphone maker while Samsung dominates globally and has made incremental gains in the US.

Android is hovering at just above 50 percent penetration in the US. Apple/iOS is growing and has reached a new high of nearly 42 percent. By comparison, BlackBerry has fallen off a cliff. It has gone from a share of more than 31 percent in 2010 to 3.4 percent today.

These data come from the most recent comScore US smartphone market share report. The firm says that 65.2 percent of the US mobile subscriber population now own smartphones, which is very close to Nielsen’s estimate.

Once strong OEMs Motorola and HTC are stuck in single digits. Google last week announced the $2.91 billion sale of Motorola to Chinese hardware maker Lenovo. Whether the latter can revive the Motorola brand in the US and abroad is uncertain.

Korean conglomerate LG has made some handset gains in the US recently because of the success of the Nexus 4 and 5 Android handsets, which it makes on Google’s behalf.

Like the smartphone figures, the ranking of top mobile apps and most-visited mobile websites for December is almost totally unchanged from last month and generally from July 2013, which is the first month comScore released this data. Compare comScore’s most recent mobile internet rankings to those from July 2013 below.

Facebook retains its top-app status. However Google has somewhat greater audience reach though its collection of apps and mobile web properties.
